6063 is a 6xxx-series wrought alloy with roughly 0.45-0.9% magnesium and 0.2-0.6% silicon, which form Mg2Si for age hardening. It extrudes easily at high speed into complex thin sections and gives a clean surface that takes anodising and powder coating well. It is usually supplied in T5 or T6 temper.
Why it matters when buying
- For billets, ask for chemistry, diameter and length, and confirm homogenisation; unhomogenised billet causes surface streaks and slower extrusion.
- For profiles, specify alloy and temper, weight per metre, dimensions and tolerance, and surface finish.
- Check hardness or tensile values against the agreed standard, since under-aged sections are a common complaint.
- Clean 6063 offcuts and process scrap command a premium as extrusion scrap.
Typical uses
Window and door sections, facade systems, furniture and partition frames, solar module frames, LED housings, handrails and general architectural profiles. It is also the usual base alloy for anodised and powder-coated sections. For higher strength, extruders move to 6061 or 6082. See listings for billets and extrusions.
