The ISRI Scrap Specifications Circular, published by the US Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (now part of ReMA, the Recycled Materials Association), gives code words for scrap grades. They are widely used in Indian import contracts and in domestic trade as a shared language. Examples for aluminium include:
- Taldon / Talcred / Taldack: used beverage cans, loose, shredded or densified (UBC).
- Taint/Tabor: clean mixed old alloy sheet (Taint/Tabor).
- Tense: mixed aluminium castings (Tense).
- Teens / Telic: borings and turnings.
- Troma: auto wheels; Tarry: pistons; Talk: aluminium-copper radiators.
- Talon / Taste: new and old pure aluminium wire and cable.
- Zorba: shredded mixed non-ferrous (Zorba).
Why it matters when buying
- A code word sets expectations on composition, form and allowed contamination, but contracts should still state limits and inspection terms.
- Local Indian trade names do not always map exactly to ISRI grades; describe the material as well as the code.
- Check the current circular, as definitions are revised from time to time.
