Powder coating is the most common finish for aluminium windows, doors and facade profiles in India. The metal is first cleaned and given a conversion pretreatment, traditionally chromate based and increasingly chrome-free, to promote adhesion and corrosion resistance. Charged powder, usually polyester for outdoor use, is sprayed on and then cured in an oven, where it melts and cross-links into a continuous film. Super-durable and PVDF liquid coatings are used where higher weathering resistance is needed.
Why it matters when buying
- Pretreatment quality decides long-term performance; ask what system is used and how it is controlled.
- Specify colour (RAL or shade card), gloss, film thickness in microns and the weathering class of the powder.
- Check adhesion, film thickness and colour consistency on delivery, and look for orange peel or bare spots.
- Painted profiles become painted extrusion scrap at end of life, which recovers less metal than bare scrap because the coating burns off.
