6061 is a 6xxx-series wrought alloy with about 0.8-1.2% magnesium, 0.4-0.8% silicon and small additions of copper and chromium. It is one of the most widely used general structural alloys, combining good strength in the T6 temper, good corrosion resistance, weldability and machinability. It is produced as extrusions, rod and bar, sheet, plate and forgings.
Why it matters when buying
- 6061 is harder to extrude than 6063, so thin or complex profiles may cost more or need redesign.
- Always state the temper; 6061-O and 6061-T6 behave very differently in forming and strength.
- Check tensile strength, yield and elongation on the mill test certificate, especially for load-bearing parts.
- Welding reduces strength in the heat-affected zone; designers should account for this.
- Some buyers treat 6061 and 6082 as alternatives; confirm acceptance before substituting.
Typical uses
Structural frames, truck and trailer parts, marine fittings, machined components, moulds, jigs and fixtures, bicycle frames, and solar mounting structures. See aluminium for solar mounting structures and listings under sheets and plate and extrusions.
