P1020 (often written P1020A) is the benchmark grade of primary aluminium. The name encodes the impurity limits: maximum 0.10% silicon and maximum 0.20% iron, with aluminium at 99.70% minimum. It is the grade deliverable against the LME aluminium contract, so most primary pricing worldwide refers back to it.
Why it matters when buying
- Check the Al purity %, Si and Fe on the mill test certificate; trace elements such as Ga, V and Zn may also be specified.
- Confirm form and size: standard ingots of roughly 20-25 kg, sows, or T-bars, and how they are strapped into bundles.
- Ask whether the quote is for P1020 or a higher-purity grade such as 99.85%; they are not interchangeable in price.
- Agree how weighbridge weight and invoice weight will be reconciled at delivery.
Typical uses
P1020 ingot is remelted by extruders, rollers and foundries, used to dilute iron in secondary melts, and cut into notch bars or shots for steel deoxidation. Higher-purity or EC-specific grades are preferred for electrical conductor. Compare live offers under primary ingots.
