What to agree with importers
- Recovery %: Recovery is the metal you get back after melting scrap or dross. Agree how it will be checked, for example a trial melt on a sample, and how it affects the rate.
- Contamination: Iron, plastic, rubber, dirt and other metals reduce value and can spoil a melt. Agree an acceptable limit and how deductions will be made on arrival.
- Moisture / oil: Wet or oily scrap and turnings lose weight on melting and are a safety risk in the furnace. Agree a limit and whether material must be dried or de-oiled.
- Packing: Agree how material is bundled, strapped, palletised or wrapped, and how it is protected from moisture and damage in transit. Poor packing is a common cause of claims.
- Spectro report: A spectro (optical emission spectrometer) report shows the element-wise chemistry of a sample. Agree who draws the sample, from which part of the lot, and which lab result will settle a dispute.
- Commercial terms: rate basis, GST, freight, payment terms, delivery schedule and quotation validity, all in writing before dispatch.
