5052 is a 5xxx-series wrought alloy with roughly 2.2-2.8% magnesium and a small chromium addition. It cannot be strengthened by heat treatment; strength comes from magnesium in solid solution and from cold work, which is why it is sold in H tempers such as H32 and H34. It offers higher strength than 3003, good fatigue strength, good weldability and very good resistance to marine and industrial atmospheres.
Why it matters when buying
- Specify alloy and temper, thickness, width, length or coil ID, and flatness.
- Check surface quality: scratches, roll marks and oil stains matter for visible or coated parts.
- Ask for the mill test certificate with chemistry and mechanical properties.
- For heavier marine and cryogenic plate, buyers often move up to 5083.
Typical uses
Fuel tanks, truck and bus bodies, marine and boat parts, pressure vessels, electronic chassis, kitchen equipment, signboards and general sheet metal work. The sheet grades buying guide compares 1050, 3003, 5052 and 6061. Browse sheets and coils.
