The e-way bill is generated on the GST e-way bill portal before goods move by road, rail, air or ship when the consignment value exceeds the notified threshold (generally ₹50,000, with some state variations). Part A records the supplier, recipient, invoice number, value and HSN code; Part B records the transporter and vehicle number. Validity depends on distance, and the bill must be updated if the vehicle changes.
Why it matters when buying
- Goods moving without a valid e-way bill, or with wrong details, can be detained and penalised in transit, delaying your material.
- Scrap consignments receive particular scrutiny; make sure invoice weight, HSN and GSTINs are correct and match the truck.
- Agree who generates the bill (usually the supplier or transporter) and share it before the truck leaves.
- Keep weighbridge slips with the e-way bill and invoice to support any weight dispute at delivery.
Notes
Rules on thresholds, validity and e-invoicing change from time to time, so confirm current requirements with your tax adviser.
